Nostalgia

Nostalgia filled Julia’s mind. She remembered how she would be too scared to go down to the bottom of the garden from her childhood. She had been convinced that there was a scary man there. Silly things we imagine, she thought as she smiled in remembrance. ” I wonder what was at the end of the garden.” Her brother, who was one year older than her, would tease her and tell her she was a scaredy-cat. He went there frequently and was never scared off by a scary man. Consequently, Julia had finally decided to see what was there

Julia’s trip

Strolling slowly through the long grass and the prickles from overgrown rose bushes, Julia made her way to walk the path. Birds could be heard chirping; otherwise, all was still and quiet. During a recent storm, Julia tripped on a branch that had fallen from a tree. Her bare knees grazed on the dry ground, and her face also failed not to miss being scathed. For a moment, Julia felt out of sorts. Blurred fairies passed by her eyes, and when she returned to her feet, she had to quickly sit down again. As a result, Julia Felt woozy and shocked from the sudden fall that had taken all of her strength.

The question now was, should she go and see what was at the bottom of the garden, which was a five-minute walk away? Or should she return to her car, which was only a two-minute walk away? She’d come this far and wanted to see what was there. It would be a shame to come all this way and not see it. Therefore she decided to continue. Her knee was now beginning to throb. She must have knocked it hard for it to feel so sore. Thankfully, her water bottle was in her black handbag, which draped over her shoulder. Having a drink would give her the energy she needed so she took a swig. She decided that if she limped to the bottom of the garden, it would be just about bearable.

The Dog in The Bottom of the Garden

A light-coloured, short-haired Labrador ambled towards Julia. He stood in front of her, expecting to be patted. Julia complied. ” Someone to keep me safe when I go to the bottom of the garden, eh?” She said. “Okay, I’ll get up now. We can both go to the bottom of the garden.” She placed her right palm on the ground and groaned as she pushed herself up. The dog walked ahead, panting.

As they strolled, the dog stopped and picked up a stick lying on the grass. The Labrador put it on the ground and stood before Julia, waiting. As a result Julia threw the twig twenty-five meters ahead. The dog ran as soon as she threw the bark and grabbed it after it landed under the tree to the left. Once back in front of her, he again dropped the stick and waited.

After five more throws, Julia realized that she would never see the end of the garden if this game continued. So she said. “Dog,” She didn’t know his name. “We are going to have to stop this game. I want to see what is at the bottom of the garden.” The dog in return yowled in protest but agreed she would not see the bottom of the garden at this rate

Julia continued limping along with the dog five feet ahead of her. ” What’s it like at the bottom of the garden? ” she said.

The Bottom of the Garden

“Woof”, the dog said. They continued walking, each step becoming easier for Julia as her pain subsided. Soon, they reached the bottom of the garden. Julia stood there in amazement. It was beautiful, a lovely small building, like a child’s playhouse but made with bricks. “My fear made me miss out.” Julia thought. She would have loved to have come and played at this playhouse as a child. But why didn’t her brother tell her it was here?

Julia edged to get closer and find out what was inside the house. The dog started growling and backed off a bit. “What’s wrong?” Julia said. She looked ahead again and understood why. Fear gripped her when she saw an angry clown with a hammer from the house medicinally approaching her.

The dog barked and ran towards the clown. Julia forgot her knee pain and ran until she reached her car. She fumbled for her keys, got in and drove off. Looking in her back mirror, she saw the dog had followed her. “At least he was okay.” She thought. Had that clown always been there? Was it intuition that had kept her away as a child? Had her brother experienced this same intuition but never admitted it to her? At least she now knew what was at the bottom of the garden.
